What’s going on down at Waterfront Park where the old tennis courts used to be?
Bainbridge Island Rowing (BIR) has laid the foundation for the new Stan Pocock Legacy Rowing Center. Until recently, BIR stored all of their rowing shells, training equipment, and other gear on the old tennis courts, exposed to the elements.
The new 12,000 square foot, two-story Rowing Center will house the equipment and provide a gathering, workout, and planning place for rowers, helping BIR remain a safe and vibrant asset to the Bainbridge community. In addition, the new center will provide an attractive, modern community space for meetings and events, with views of Eagle Harbor and easy access to the ferry.
The project is progressing in three phases:
- Phase 1: Preparatory work. This includes the foundation and is now complete.
- Phase 2: Phase 2 has begun, and BIR is actively raising the $2.2M needed to complete the center by seeking major donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
- Phase 3: Construction. Once the remaining funds in place, BIR will be able to complete construction and begin operations.
Laying the foundation of the center was an integral part of the City of Bainbridge Island’s recent renovation of Waterfront Park.
The phased approach allowed excavated soils from the Rowing Center construction to be sued for the renovation of the park where fill soil was needed, resulting in significant cost savings to both projects.
Having the foundation in place has enabled BIR to immediately improve the operations of its programs while adding vibrancy to the park.
