The BIR Fall Juniors Program is open to all Kitsap County students in 9th grade or higher. The goals for the 8-week season are to develop rowing technique, specifically with lower stroke rates and longer pieces, and to build strength, fitness, and flexibility.
In the fall we focus primarily on longer distances to prepare rowers for “Head” style racing. In Head races, boats start one after another and race for time over a 5-kilometer course. Stamina and control in the boat are paramount, as is the quality of the coxswain’s steering and boat leadership.
Most Fridays we will practice the race distance on our own challenging 5K loop through Eagle Harbor.
All rowers and parents must attend the appropriate Fall Orientation meetings in the Bainbridge High School (BHS) Commons. Important information is shared for both new and returning rowers.
- Varsity: Tuesday, September 3, 7-8 p.m.
- Novice: Wednesday, September 4, 7-8 p.m.
Novice group float/flip tests will take place on Monday, September 9th at 2:15 pm (at the Aquatic Center).
Rowing fees for the Fall 2019 season are due by September 5. A $50 late fee will added for any registration completed after September 5. Fall season fees include the cost of participation in the single-day regattas during the season.
- Varsity: $587
- Novice: $587
In addition, all rowers must have paid:
- The BIR annual membership fee of $90. For new rowers starting in Fall season, the fee is $45.
- The USRowing membership fee.
Fee Payment: See the Juniors Registration page for full information and guidance about how to pay fees each season.
Fee Refunds: BIR recognizes that most new rowers have never been in a rowing shell before, so they may not know if rowing is the right sport for them before registering. Therefore, we offer the opportunity to receive a full or partial refund of fees, in order to allow young athletes the chance to ‘try before they buy’:
Weeks 1: Full refund
Weeks 2-3: 50% refund
Weeks 4+: No refunds
Scholarships: Scholarships may be available to Junior rowers based on need and funding availability. Visit the Scholarships page for details.
Please visit the Juniors Registration page to review participation requirements and complete the registration steps.
Questions? Please email the Junior Registrar at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Practices are held Monday through Friday at Waterfront Park, 3:40 to 6:10 p.m., per the dates below:
- Varsity: September 5 – November 3
- Novices: September 9 – November 3
