BIR SUMMER 2020 SCULLING PROGRAMS

What do orcas and BIR masters have in common?  They both travel in PODS!

BIR is excited to announce that after much hard work and thoughtful planning, we will be offering limited single-shell based rowing programs for experienced rowers. Athletes will row in coached practices 2x per week. Initially, each practice will be limited to “pods” of five boats per coach, with additional launch operators used at the coaches’ discretion.

Pods sizes will increase as Kitsap County Health Guidelines and boat availability allows. Thank you to all who have worked so hard to determine these next steps. They literally “wrote the book” on opening safely running programs during a pandemic. And thank you to the private shell owners who are making their boats available for BIR program use!

BIR thanks the Bainbridge Community Foundation for a generous grant, which allows us to offer additional scholarship opportunities to keep our programs affordable to our community during the COVID-19 Pandemic. More information on scholarships can be found here: https://bainbridgerowing.org/scholarships/

Novice Programs: Masters and Juniors Learn-to-Row and Intro to Rowing Youth Camps are on hold during this limited re-entry time. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to offering them soon!

What to Expect

Rowers will follow specific protocols developed by BIR in accordance with the Kitsap County Health Department, State of Washington, and CDC guidelines, which include the cleaning of all equipment after each session, wearing of masks when not on the water, and proper social distancing among athletes and our coaching staff. Full details on BIR protocols can be found in the attached “BIR COVID-19 Return to Rowing Plan”.

Kitsap County Safe Start Phases as they apply to BIR Rowing Programs:

  • Phase 1: no rowing, no group land workouts.
  • Phase 2: Five rowers per coach (singles-based rowing) with optional second launch operator. No on-site cross training. “Pod-based programs” limits your exposure to four other rowers/week. During Phase 2, rower substitutions are not allowed.
  • Phases 3 & 4: Continued singles-based rowing. Number of rowers determined by coach with optional additional launch operators. Multiple on-water sessions may overlap, provided social distancing can be maintained. Training allowed outside of the boathouse with proper sanitization and distancing of 12’ between people using ergs, mats or weights. Facial coverings should be used when on land, except when actively working out with proper distancing. Rower substitutions are allowed in phases 3 and 4.
