BIR Junior Mens 4 plus - Windermere Cup 2017

BIR Juniors Take 2nd Place at Windermere Cup

Varsity and Masters athletes from Bainbridge Island Rowing both competed in the 31st annual Windermere Cup Regatta in Seattle on Saturday, May 6th. The regatta is held as part of Seattle’s Opening Day of Boating Season celebration and includes no less than 21 races on Lake Washington and the Montlake Cut and more than 100 male and female athletes ranging in age from 14 to 70.

The Men’s Varsity 4+ (John Danielsson, Dan Queen, Matthew Derry, Aaron Lewis-Sandy, and Kalyn Warren at cox) took second place in their race, beating teams from Green Lake and Commencement Bay rowing clubs, with a time of 6:53 on the 2000 meter course. Everett Rowing Club won with a time of 6:36.

The Women’s Varsity 4+ (Olivia Pells, Julia Batson, Amalie Millerd, Tessa Longley, and Caitlin Deavy at cox) came in 4th in a close race against Brentwood, Rose City, and Pocock rowing clubs, with a time of 7:33.

The Masters Over-50 Men’s 8+ (Anthony Oddo, Nicolai Otte, Malcolm Saunders, Tim Goss, Brandon Fleet, Kurt Frost, John Christiansen, Mark Olason, and Page Montgomery at cox) had rowed in a close race with Mount Baker, Commencement Bay, and Station L of Portland through the first half, when they locked oars with Mount Baker at the 1250-meter mark. The incident forced both boats to stop rowing and disengage their oars, costing each precious seconds. However, the BIR crew were able to recover well enough to ultimately take third place overall behind Station L and Mount Baker.

BIR’s next and final Juniors Regatta of the Spring Season will be down at the USRowing Northwest Regional Championships in Vancouver, WA from May 19 to 21.

BIR’s Masters rowers will also conclude their Spring Season on Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, WA at the Northwest Masters Regional Championships from June 23 to 25.
