We’re looking forward to a fun and inspiring season both on and off the water!
See below for details about the season
Middle School Fall Program Info
Program Cost: $740 for program fees and $40 for BIR dues
Additional Cost: $25 for USRowing membership ($20 for existing members) All rowers must have a valid US Rowing Membership (good for 365 days).
The middle school program is designed as a positive and inspiring introduction to the sport of rowing for any and all 7th and 8th graders (coed). We employ a ground-up approach for the brand new athlete that aims to build their knowledge of equipment and safe practices, mechanics of the stroke and the principles of teamwork. For the ‘rowing-curious’, our first week focuses on familiarization and fundamentals: starting on land and then moving into the stable ‘barge’ on the water. Registration will be capped at 20 participants.
2024 Fall Key Dates:
- September 9th– Float Tests for all new rowers. Meet at the Aquatic Center at 1:30pm (float test takes 10 minutes). All rowers must have a float test on file.

We are pleased to introduce a Recreational Program at BIR!
The BIR Youth Recreation Program is designed for the junior athlete who wants to continue building their rowing skills in a less demanding and time-intensive program. It is an inclusive and fun program that offers all rowers the opportunity to focus on maintaining fitness, refining skills and socializing in a supportive, team-oriented environment. Sessions will be three days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and Saturday mornings). Athletes must have already completed an 8th grade, Novice, Varsity or Summer ‘Try Rowing’ program. This program will be led by Coach Meg. Here is a bit about her:
“I began rowing at the Detroit Boat Club in 1989 in their juniors program. We were a highly competitive and driven crew–training and racing throughout the entire calendar year—garnering medals at multiple Nationals during my three-year stint there. I also returned to Detroit to race and coach their adult Learn to Row Program during the summer of 1993. I was on varsity crew all four years at Georgetown, and I was captain of the women’s crew my Junior Year. I was invited to, and attended, pre-elite camps the summers of 1994 and 1995. Georgetown joined the NCAA during my tenure there and I joyfully used this additional year of eligibility to row varsity during my first year at Stanford. I’ve won “Most Valuable Oarswoman” awards at both the Detroit Boat Club and Stanford University. Both my Georgetown and Stanford crews trained fiercely and medaled much. I also assistant coached the Stanford Novice women in the fall of 2000.”
At this time, Junior Recreational Team enrollment is limited to 16 athletes.
