About Us: 

Bainbridge Island Rowing (BIR) is a thriving 501(c)(3) non-profit nestled in the heart of beautiful Bainbridge Island, Washington. Established with humble beginnings on empty tennis courts in 2001, BIR is proud to have debuted our fully realized and community-funded new facility in Fall 2023. Overlooking Eagle Harbor, the new Stan Pocock Rowing Center in Waterfront Park is adjacent to the downtown Winslow core and a short walk to the Seattle / Bainbridge ferry terminal.

BIR boasts year-round youth and adult programs designed to foster a love for rowing at all experience levels and to cater to both recreational and competitive goals. Our organization is currently 200 rowers strong plus a small army of dedicated volunteers, many of them parents, who all share a passion for the sport and our people. Backed by this incredible community and our talented coaching staff, BIR consistently produces regionally and nationally competitive crews.

The Opportunity:  

BIR is seeking a new coach for our adult team (Tuesday evening, Thursday evening, Saturday morning, with additional hours available). This individual will bring their professional experience as a coach of adult (masters) rowers. This role is a part-time hourly position that reports to the Deputy Director of Rowing.

Coaching:

  • Teach rowing concepts, technique and safety that are in line with BIR methodology
  • Prepare athletes for team and personal success through comprehensive, well-organized land and on the water workouts
  • Communicate the goals, practice plan, and team-specific information to athletes
  • Provide individual feedback to athletes on performance and strive for improvement with every participant 
  • Allocate time, focus and training for the development of confident and competent coxswains who respect and motivate their crews
  • Provide training and mentoring for other coaches and assistant coaches to continuously improve skills and abilities
    • Define line ups and boat assignments for regattas
  • Attend regattas to provide coordination, boat/equipment loading and unloading supervision, instruction and motivation or have covered by another coach

Programming & Administration:

  • Maintain open lines of communication with athletes
  • Prepare line-ups of boats and athletes before each practice
  • If changes are made to line-ups that affect coxing, adjust iCrew to recognize coxing credit. Check in participants for each practice.  
  • Attend regularly scheduled coaches meetings.
  • Assist with planning and budgeting for upcoming rowing seasons.
  • Keep an accurate log of time worked and enter time at least every two weeks into the online payroll program or volunteer hours log in iCrew

Safety:

  • On water and on land, model and provide a safety focus on all activities
  • Achieve this through the use of life vest bags on launches, use of established traffic patterns, use of radios to communicate with other boats on the water, wearing a PFD while on the water, and general awareness and enforcement of the BIR Safety Policy.  Always carry a megaphone for hailing crews beyond voice distances.
  • Be familiar with all launches and be comfortable with launch use systems.  Master general launch handling before accompanying crews on the water.
  • Raise any SafeSport or Code of Conduct concerns to the SafeSport Coordinator and assist with mitigation.
  • Make the safety call on what waters to row and when based on BIR policies related to conditions, athlete skill, boats to be used and water traffic. Inform Deputy Director of Rowing so that appropriate coordinated communications can go out to athletes for inclement weather and other environmental conditions. 
  • Complete BIR reporting protocols for any accident/incident involving damage to equipment and/or risk to safety on the water
  • Work with the Deputy Director of Rowing and Safety Officer to ensure safe operations and safety incidents are addressed in a timely and effective manner

Facilities & Equipment:

  • After practice, ensure launches are secure, equipment and tools are put away, items left behind are moved to the lost and found, and upper level floor and stairs are broom clean.
  • Before leaving the boathouse, ensure the facility is locked and orderly, and lights and fans are off.
  • If possible, make simple repairs immediately after practice and note the fix in the equipment log.
  • Log all unresolved equipment maintenance and repair issues.
  • Develop knowledge and skill in the basics of equipment maintenance and repair. 
  • Work with Boatperson and others to perform repairs, assist with staging, rigging/de-rigging of boats, maintenance and repair of boats and boatyard equipment. 
  • Schedule and help oversee regular equipment maintenance work parties for assigned teams.

Qualifications:  

BIR is seeking candidates who bring a diverse and compelling blend of experience, skills, and credentials including:

  • Competitive rowing and coaching experience, USRowing Level 2 coaching credentials or in process
  • Capacity to learn and employ relevant software
  • Experience maintaining boathouse equipment and/or capacity to learn
  • Washington State Boater Education Card
  • First Aid, CPR and AED Certification
  • SafeSport certification
  • Driving record acceptable to BIR’s insurance carrier.  Ability to drive a boat trailer preferred.
  • Ability to bend, reach, twist, squat, climb stairs, and lift up to 35lbs.

 

Compensation and Benefits:

The Coach position offers a pay rate of $22 – $27 per hour based on experience.
